KPIGHey, it’s KPIG appreciation week, hippies!

Spending time in Zipcars has renewed my appreciation for the spirit of radio, and one likes to believe in the music from Freedom.

The Central Coast’s home to whatever “Americana” music is supposed to be is now broadcasting in the Bay Area on AM1510. Not since the glory days of KNEW Classic Country (see 1997 here) has there been listenable radio around these parts (though we will always have a soft spot for Energy 92.7, R.I.P.).

James McMurtryI’ve heard a few songs over the past week I’d like to share, starting with this one. It’s got that sort-of MOR Americana sound that I don’t really go for, but the lyrics are effing winners. You had me at “Strap the kids in, give em a little bit of vodka in a Cherry Coke.”

Plus, why aren’t there more songs with crystal meth in them? I can think of songs by the Hold Steady, Joe Gideon & The Shark, and the Scissor Sisters off the top o me head, but not a ton of others. Maybe being a chatty, paranoid asshole with bad teeth just isn’t as glamorous as vomiting and nodding off in a corner. Stay tuned for Meth Week!
