Remember my gushing about the wisdom of Danny Barnes a ways back? Well, he’s not the only ridiculously erudite member of the Bad Livers.
Mark Rubin holds court at his blog Chasing The Fat Man, which is stacked to the rafters with good music and scholarship. (I’m going to try to tackle this one — maybe a little more coffee first…)
He’s devoted his life to folk/traditional music — not only American, but also Yiddish and Lautari (less-prejudical terms for Klezmer and Gypsy), and is passionate about how musicians approach and appropriate folk traditions. (Check this interview at the Steam Powered Preservation Society for more.)
People who care so deeply about this = hope for the future of music. (So okay, next generation: who’s up?)
Rubin’s latest project is an acoustic duo that performs American music in the style of the great brother acts of the last century. But if you’re familiar with Rubin’s way of thinking, you already know that this is no museum exhibit — Rubin wants to respect and continue tradition, not replicate it — but a contemporary, living thing.
