Yo La Tengo is a band that existed outside my focus for years (oh, let’s say about twenty), but it was hard not to notice an album called I Am Not Afaid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass. That 2006 effort opened my mind to how versatile and just flat-out professional they are, taking on different styles of pop songs and nailing them.
Their latest album, Popular Songs, continues the variety and quality — they’re comfortable and accomplished, and can do whatever they put their minds to. Here’s the opening track.
