I’m a sucker for an angry young man in a coat and tie sitting at a piano and spitting out pop songs. White Rabbits brought their bigger-than-Slim’s show to Slim’s and showed why they deserve the attention they’ve been getting.
Their sophomore album It’s Frightening is an excellent pop album with great sound, but in a live setting you could really get a sense of the insane amount of potential this young band has. Well-constructed and arranged tunes, delivered with serious conviction and the tightness that road veterans achieve.
And hey, other bands, take heed: get somebody to whang on a few floor toms with mallets like his life depends on it while you belt out your songs. Works. (Thanks, Matthew Clark.)
Did I mention Spoon’s Britt Daniel came out during the encore to join White Rabbits in doing “Instant Karma”? It pays to go out, dear hearts. See you next time, OK?
