I didn’t see this one coming. Fuck Buttons’ first album, Street Horrrsing, was a wicked hunk of noisy electronic music — really excellent, but something you’d really have to qualify before recommending. Thick, dark, and only one track (“Bright Tomorrow”) with what you might call a dance beat.
But their new album, Tarot Sport, starts off immediately with the overwhelming “Surf Solar,” a 10-minute-plus wham of ass-shakingry. Still dark & thick, but suddenly you’re not in a state of still concentration, you’re wigglin’ around like a raver. Fuck Buttons have made this leap in accessibility without sacrificing what makes them so interesting, so if you dig, dig in — it’s a fantastic album.
I’m posting the short version of “Surf Solar,” but TRUST ME, the long version is three times as long and five times as awesome. (Locals will find them at Bottom of the Hill on Nov. 13.)
