Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009 (Saturday):
All At Once I’m Seized Again By Exquisite Hurt

by Kevin Vegetables on October 6, 2009

Festivals are an amazing opportunity to get acquainted with artists that have somehow remained just outside your grasp. Nick Lowe was someone I always meant to invest in more seriously, but hadn’t yet.

So ring the bells, chums, ’cause one man, a guitar, and a three-minute pop song be a mighty, mighty thing. I often prefer to see the seriously talented songwriters in this sort of format, uncluttered by bandmates and solos. Just getting an overview of a fella’s work from his own point of view.

Did I mention he produced Damned Damned Damned? That brings me this much closer to having made that record myself! (He also produced and played most of the instruments on Wreckless Eric’s amazingly monster “Whole Wide World,” but if I get started on Nick Lowe’s production credits I’ll be here all day.)

Mr. Lowe came out with winner after winner, and if you think his heyday was in the 80s you’ve been missing out on some classics of the 21st century, as evidenced by today’s Veg, a love letter to country music.
