I had a revelation in the mid-90s that I should have gotten a Scorpions tattoo in the 80s. By the time I thought of it, though, I felt it was too late — their music was watered down, and a Scorps tattoo would come off more ironic than rockin. I assumed I simply had missed my chance at this sort of thing, but you know, for these last several years the idea of getting a Belle & Sebastian tattoo has seemed like an equally great idea.
I never thought about this level of fealty in terms of anyone else until last week when I went on a(nother) Sufjan Stevens rampage (three words you often see together). I’m repeatedly over-the-moon impressed with his creativity, commitment, and especially his courage. It’s not exactly a Jesus-loving community out there in the independent-music world, but Sufjan responds to what moves him, whether it’s Christ or John Wayne Gacy.
And plus how adorable is he?
So, you know, go ahead and feel confident about that Sufjan tattoo. This photo’s a good place to start, but he takes a lot of good pictures.
The more fortunate and economically comfortable among us will be able to see the entire Seven Swans album performed this Saturday at All Tomorrow’s Parties in NYC.

And here’s a little “Seven Swans” from his 2006 tour (if you want to catch the beginning of the story, it’s written in the info on the video’s YouTube page):

Saw him do this last night here in NY. I had never given it a listen before. Utter chills. Might be my favorite Sufjan song of the moment.
Auggghh! Pangs of jealousy … now receding … I’m so happy for you!
I also was less familiar with Seven Swans when I saw him play on the Illinois tour, and his version of The Transfiguration just melted me.
Well I’m jealous of anyone who’s seen the Illinois tour! He did a big scattering of stuff. All said, I wasn’t really prepared for Sufjan live, all his songs have such different textures. Nice blog btw.
We all have a lot to be thankful for …
Thanks for reading & commenting — hope to see you around!
