I’ve mentioned before how I like to keep track of what music my favorite musicians are listening to. And even musicians I’m not super into have guided me along the path of righteousness.
It’s pretty easy these days to dig up that sort of information these days, through interviews, year-end lists, and mixes/compilations such as the Another Late Night/Late Night Tales, DJ-Kicks, and Back To Mine series. Those mixes have brought us some of our favorite Vegetables, such as “Lady Bug,” “Shake A Puddin’,” and “Here’s What’s Left.”
You’d assume that a professional DJ would be pretty good at making this sort of mix, and you’d be right. The better DJs of the world have a depth of musical knowledge that far exceeds the limitations of whatever sort of music they make their living spinning. I’ve learned a ton from the Fabric Podcast (aka Fabric Pohdcahst), which puts DJs, writers, producers, and musicians behind the controls for 90 minutes. Many of the hosts take you through their personal music-fan history, talking about and playing music that strongly affected or influenced them. Totally and hella not just for dance-music fans.
Uh-oh, where was I?
Oh, hey! So the new Back To Mine is by your main man Krafty Kuts, and is a seamless mix of grooves in the soul/funk/electro/hip-hop range, with a cover of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” by the Incredible Bongo Band thrown in for good measure.
On it, you’ll also find today’s Vedge: a 1992 Pete Rock-produced classic that’s been rockin the Subaru Veg-o-matic for the past week.

Thank you for this. Refreshing, to say the least, in a world filled with din.
