Super fun at the Pains of Being Pure at Heart show last night — I might be getting old (might?), but I really love it when a good band with hella buzz rolls through town and turns out to be really nice people.
What’s plus more, our own precious Girls opened, and though they didn’t get the bodacious response they earned (maybe the crowd hadn’t been told that Girls were the newest thing), they turned it out with their loud, reverby songs of wanting love, attention, and to be your friend forever. I’m very much looking forward to their upcoming album, Album, due out September 22 on True Panther/Matador.
After Girls finishes up their Pains tour, they’ll be on the road again with Los Campesinos! so it’s a summer of fun (except in SF, where if you want to see Los Campesinos! you have to pay $90 to watch them open for Pearl Jam, and I am not even kidding).
I posted Hellhole Ratrace last year when it was but a wee baby demo, but it’s a real grown-up 10″ now, and still one of the best songs I’ve heard in recent years. The vinyl is going to be pretty limited, so the labels are nice enough to let us have the digital version for free.

Tales Of The Silver Crest
Here’s the amazing “Hellhole Ratrace” video, which pretty much spells out what a long night here can be like. It makes me simultaneously wistful and very grateful to not have a hangover.
And am I glad…
I found the True Panther blog this morning. Otherwise I never would have seen this.

Dude, they’re not opening for Pearl Jam, they’re just playing at a festival that Pearl Jam is headlining! LC! opening for PJ would be the most insanely mismatched concert ever.
(Good post, I do love Girls)
Does Matador have any bad bands? Doesn’t seem like it.
Looking at their lineup (current and historic), it’s pretty ridiculous.
Thanks for inciting me to go look, because otherwise I wouldn’t have found out that they’re selling copies of Closing In by Early Man on VINYL for five bucks!
