Singing Lullabies To All The Saints And All We’ve Lost

What do you think’s going on in New York? It’s almost as if there’s some secret colony built around a magic pool of musical prodigies, occasionally releasing one into the pop universe.

Oh, there is one? It’s called Juilliard?

Christina CourtinAnyways, I’m always down to hear a pop record from someone with serious musical training. At the very least you can be sure there aren’t any half-assed decisions being made. You’re also usually assured of top-level musicians playing on it.

Christina Courtin’s debut self-titled jazzy-pop album has the kind of self-assurance you get after 22 years of study. She makes as many  interesting choices as expected ones, and even the more mainstream tracks contain plenty of interest for the close listener.

I’d also like to say it’s endearing to see a polished, next-Norah-Jones-style performer start her first foray into Internet self-marketing with a MySpace blog post titled My first blog and CD….omg!”

The killer, though, is the single. One listen and that melody’s jammed into your head. Jammed, I say! Jammit!

Hear it now, or hear it later, but you’ll undoubtedly hear it a thousand times over the years, so why not start today before you start associating it with a commercial?*

SF locals: Christina Courtin brings her live show to an early (7:30PM) show at Cafe du Nord this Thursday the 21st. Eight bucks for advance tickets, what’s  to lose?
