Summer Wasn’t Bad Below The Bridge

Townes Van Zandt

Oh, Lord, dear hearts, I made a beautiful, painful mistake yesterday.

Rainy Monday, I’m slow and shaky and settle in for some work. Townes Van Zandt’s been on my mind a lot lately (as per usual), so I decide to dive a lil’ deeper in the collection to hear some I haven’t listened to a thousand times.

Van Zandt’s final studio recording came out in 1995, less than two years before he died of heartache. Usually when I listen to stuff from his last five years I choose the live recordings (you can hear the end coming in his ragged-before-its-time voice, which lends a bittersweet depth to his early songs), so I wasn’t that familiar with No Deeper Blue.

Anyways, today’s Vedge hurt me so much it practically killed my whole day. So, you know, maybe listen later in the day, or maybe have some cute little kids or some puppies lined up to give you kisses afterwards. I got saved by another Townes Van Zandt song (as per usual), but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow for that one. Kids and puppies are probably a safer option anyway.
