Akron/Family

Some months ago I saw that the Hemlock was hosting a three-night residency by a band called Akron/Family. I had never heard their music, but Hemlock booker Tony B knows what he’s doing, so if someone’s residing there for a long weekend, I look into it.

I listened to Akron/Family’s 2007 album Love Is Simple and dug it, but I heard the live shows were where it was at. So there I was on Saturday, and let me tell you, dear hearts, I ain’t been the same since–and I’m not talking about having lost the hearing in my left ear even though I was wearing earplugs. (Anyways, that’s a fair tradeoff, unlike that time I thought I had gone deaf due to a terrible Ace Frehley solo.)

I’ll be honest witchoo–there was more of a jam-band flavor than I’m usually comfortable with, but those three dudes beat back my trepidation with joy. And what do I like better than joy?  Dancing? Folk music? Heavy feedbacky dissonant jams? Audience sing-and-chant-alongs? Distorted screaming? Love? Wait, wait–earnest young men! I like those!

Luckily, I did not have to choose, cuz I got all that stuff plus extra-heart heartsauce wrapped up in a celebratory tortilla, creating the hippie breakfast burrito of my dreams. For dinner!

Goddammit! I want to be pissed for not knowing about this but in fact I was stuck ferrying around Tara’s uncle all weekend. Did I mention the dammit?

Dammit returned! I could have used a friend. Plus it’s always good to have a laundry buddy after being in a room full of happy sweaty hippies.
