In My Head, I’m Only Half Together

by Kevin Vegetables on January 21, 2009

To quote DJ Kool, this is a special dedication going out to everybody here.

You can thank T-Bizzy for the Roberta “Lossless” Flack request, which sent me down a rabbit hole of soul. When I came up for air I was crying, and still clinging to Donny Hathaway’s mustache.

Roberta & Donny’s 1972 album of duets is a wonderful record, both as an album and as a document of the times. Black Pride and Black Power were frequent themes in late-60s and early-70s soul, but most of these songs took the task of uplifting the people. Today’s Vegetable, the only original track on Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, takes a more tender and personal approach.
