Maybe it’s the singing about daydreams and the image of falling asleep amid flowers, but it’s not just this song. Steve Mason’s cuddly teddy-bear voice always makes me want to curl up in it and drift safely off (no matter how depressing the rest of the lyrics are).
The Beta Band is one of those bands that lived a public tale of what can happen when creativity collides with commerce. It has to happen to somebody once in a while, and it’s a shame when it happens to people with that much talent and promise.
You can tell the story of many bands with music alone, but you can’t tell the story of the Beta Band without record companies and debt. They had the potential to become one of The Big Bands, but got themselves in a position where they needed to become one of The Big Bands.
Times have changed. They used to be smelly.

P.S. If it had to end, at least it did so with the world’s best breakup statement (from Steve Mason):
“The minority is always right. I left the room with silent dignity but caught my foot on the mat, and a thousand, thousand slimy things lived on, and so did I. This is adding insult to injuries. By the way, who’s your fat friend?”
