And If You Go To Church, Then Hip-Hop Won’t Like You

DJ Quik is one of those guys you don’t hear about often enough. He’s been working consistently since the 80s, and he still has a keen musical sense — I’m particularly fond of the “Quik’s Groove” instrumentals he drops into most of his releases.

He also has a spot in my personal Hall Of Fame for being the first person to ever use the words “checkered sweatervest” in a rap.

Plus, remember that sweat suit? You know, the gray one with the burgundy trim? He can still fit it.

This track is one of several standouts on Under Tha Influence. Talking about a dead friend isn’t unusual in hip-hop, but talking about the self-doubt and worry that’s been consuming you is.
