For me, this Summertime Jam is all about two things: the sweetly nostalgic lyrics on the sung verses, and the really quite inappropriate lyrics on the rapped verses.
The rap lyrics aren’t that inappropriate for the song itself — it’s the usual: Snoop rapping about driving around drinking champagne, Lil’ Kim mentioning how she travels to California just for the weed, etc. However, these topics seem a smidge out of place for the soundtrack to a children’s movie.
You’ve got to admire the moxie (or ignorance) of the album’s producers, who didn’t attempt to bury the song deep on the Dr. Dolittle 2 album, but instead chose it as the “Dolittle Theme” — Hey kids! Grab a cup of Moet, sit down, and shut up!
