Like We Used To

The SeascapeAfter yesterday’s world-weariness, here’s a burst of handclaps.

The Seascape is from Connecticut and they are 17 years old. I’ve never been to Connecticut, but if it’s anything like where I was 17 (and where most people are 17), there’s not many places for their band to play, and when most of their favorite bands come around, they can’t get in the front door to see them.

A couple months ago I saw a good show at an all-ages venue in Portland (which felt like a teen center, only I could drink beer if I stayed in the beer-drinking corral, which felt kind of dirty), and since then I’ve been thinking more about how difficult it can be for underage music fans, and about how few of us looked back after we turned 21. Thankfully, someone’s looking after the kids in Portland, and hopefully in your town as well. (17-year-olds are as rare as Republicans in San Francisco but if I see one, dammit, I’m helping whether they want my help or not.)

So cheers to The Seascape for making it happen when it would be a lot easier to do something else. With a well-crafted, catchy song like this under their belts, they’ve got a lot to look forward to.
