In late 2002, I needed to go to New York for a friend’s wedding. The first thing I did was get plane tickets. The second thing I did was check to see who was going to be playing. I was stoked to see that Moistboyz was going to be playing at a converted peepshow establishment off of Times Square.
On show night, my wife and I showed up right after the first of three bands had finished. We were milling about with our drinks when we found out that Moistboyz had played first. Oops.
The next band, Instant Death, was pretty OK. My wife I decided to see a little of the next band and leave if they weren’t that great.
Showtime came, and this crew of angry looking hardcore dudes (big dude with long hair, dude with a mohawk) called The Sound Of Urchin took the stage. They began to smile and play, and then I smiled and rejoiced.
There was a lot of love coming off that band.
It was a fun, varied, magical set by a band I had never heard of — one of those awesome music moments that keeps you coming back.
(Turns out it was a family show — the Moistboyz touring band includes members of both the other bands on the bill that night.)
The Sound Of Urchin has a pretty strong following in the Northeast (tapers and all that), but I never hear about them out here.
The album I bought at the show doesn’t really capture the magic parts, so if you like this song you definitely should see them next time they come around.
