This amazing song is from a 1982 double album called The Winning Hand that features Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, and Brenda Lee (duets and solos). The song is just loaded with 1982 production values, but in my opinion it’s a rare case of them adding to a song.
Willie’s done many versions since then (notably on Teatro), but he originally recorded this song in 1964. That version is on the 2003 comp The Essential Willie Nelson, so I finally got a listen to it. It sounds just as much like 1964 as this version sounds like 1982. It’s good, but I think I’ll stick with my first love.
