The Subject’s Unpopular, But I Don’t Feel Like Lyin’

I recently saw the movie The Commitments for the first time, and there’s a scene at a wedding where one of the characters is complaining about the terrible music that the band is playing. When the band takes a break, a drunk dude gets up and belts out The Proclaimers’ “Letter From America.” The ProclaimersAlthough it’s not the kind of music he prefers, the character says something to the effect of “At least that’s music.”

Because this is a vehicle for positive expression, I won’t get into whether or not there’s any music in the rest of the film, but it was very nice to see the Reid brothers get some all-too-rare props.

  1. Charlie & Craig - the best thing about Hibs fans…

A fine song - with the Reid Brothers’ usual power & emotion. Would that there were more like them doing the rounds of the music world…

  2. OMG that film and Rattle & Hum were the basis for my band’s actions. I can’t believe you hadn’t seen that. It perfectly portrays the reasons you get into a band and the reasons you get out.
